Going Green
At Roundwood Primary School, we are passionate about making better choices to improve and slow down climate change for a sustainable future. Here are some of the things we do:
- Walk to school
- Recycle different materials
- Recycle food
- Create environments for animals to breed and live
- Create compost
- Reuse equipment / resources
- Sell pre loved uniform
Our curriculum is also full of rich learning opportunities that help the children to learn about how their attitudes and behaviours towards climate change now will impact future generations. We have discrete topics such as Reduce - Reuse - Recycle and Enough for Everyone along with Forest School and outdoor learning that ensures children are connected with nature and can learn firsthand how negatively it can be affected if not looked after.
We have been supported by Gawcott Fields Communty Solar Project who have awarded us a number of grants to support our climate change initiatives. We have used the grants to pay for equipment and resources needed but most recently for a second member of staff to train as a Forest School Leader so we can have a leader situated at each site.
Please read more about Gawcott Fields Community Solar Project below.
Gawcott Fields is a community solar farm in between Buckingham and Gawcott which has been generating electricity and income from the sun since June 2016. The 4.17 megawatt solar array is made up of over 16,000 solar panels and is generating over 4 million kWh of renewable electricity each year. That’s equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 1,000 homes.
The solar farm is owned by Gawcott Fields Community Solar Project, a professionally managed community interest company (CIC) that is governed by local volunteer directors and run for the benefit of the local community.
It earns income from the sale of electricity and a Feed-in Tariff. Surplus income generated by the Community Solar Farm (after operating and finance costs) is being used to provide funding for community organisations and projects in the local area.
Local grants are available to develop community-led low carbon infrastructures, renewable energy generation and energy efficiency initiatives. Along with providing educational and other community activities which promote awareness of climate change, energy and environmental related issues and help develop positive community-led responses to the challenges we face.
